I think when I’m old and gray, Death Cab for Cutie will be known as one of our generation’s defining bands.

Not only does Minnesota band Cloud Cult use only recycled materials and donates all their profits to environmental charities, they also tour in a biodiesel van. However, this environmentalism rarely shows up in the band’s lyrics as is shown in the spectacular album “Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus.”

A few years ago, London’s Hot Chip released ‘The Warning’ and caught a lot of people off guard. Why? Frankly, the original Hot Chip LP didn’t do much: It amounted to fairly generic disco pop garbagerie that we keep hearing over and over again. This time around, thanks to a warning, we’re ready for what the men have in store for us next month when their album drops. But are we any more enthused, given what they have to provide? How about a cover of ‘Sexual Healing?’ Yes? Yes.

Is it possible to be unhappy while listening to chip-tune music? With the motto “Future music doesn’t have to use future tools” - Japanese composer “USK,” armed with only a gameboy makes some spectacular chip-tune love.

Tonight I am spending time with the lovely Claire Sanchez, and am unable to post my audio for the day.. I’m going to pass the keyboard over to her and allow her to do tonight’s:

Claire: Jamie Martin might say that “Brothers Barr blend rock, pop, avant-garde, Americana, and their own rhythmic virtuosic soundscapes to produce music that is described by fans as innovative, eclectic, and unique, yet surprisingly familiar,” but he would have certainly copied and pasted such idealogue from Wikipedia. However, Wikipedia has told me that The Slip, comprised of Brad and Andrew Barr, as well as Marc Friedman are from Boston Massachusetts. Ultimately, this means nothing to me. Also, I suspect that they may actually be the red headed step-cousins of The Decemberists. Jamie disagrees.

Jamie: Also, Wikipedia has informed me that guitarist Howard Gould is husband of Court TV sorry, “tru TV’s” bodacious anchor Ashleigh Banfield. meeeow!

“Metaphors by the millions, styles by the billions, rolling with a team of Sicilian civilains”

Toronto’s Rhythmicru has become one of the hottest hip-hop groups to emerge from the (suprisingly) crowded Canadian underground rap scene. Taking a cue from the old school styles of a Tribe Called Quest and the Beastie Boys. The recordings on these tracks are solid, Their producer, D-Ray, couldn’t have done a better job.

My #10 Album of the Year: Jay-Z - American Gangster

With his criminally overhyped, thuddingly anticlimactic comeback album, ‘Kingdom Come,’ Jay-Z offered listeners insight into the surprisingly dull life of a thirtysomething hip-hop mogul with nothing to prove and nothing much to say. The album’s disappointing sales suggested that fans found the view from the boardroom infinitely less compelling than the street-corner perspective of Jay-Z’s early work. On American Gangster, the hustler-turned-executive finds inspiration in the Ridley Scott film of the same name, the lush atmosphere of ’70s soul, and the bracing grit of blaxploitation.

American Gangster makes explicit the implicit subtext of so much street rap: that studio gangstas are generally more influenced by the contents of their DVD collections than their personal memories. Judging by this surprisingly strong return to form, Jay-Z might want to consider spending less time in the office and more time at the movies. Please, Jay.. we’re begging you.

Ultraviolet Sound - Dead on the Dancefloor

Last night while looking for a new profile song for my Myspace, (yes, I’m that ridiculous) I came across Ultraviolet Sound in the electro section, and what a fantastic surprise they turned out to be. This three piece electronica group from California churns out instant dance floor classics with their addicting blend of guitar and synthesizers. Lead singer, Sarah Hudson, is the kind of rockstar we’ve been looking for - one of the best dance music vocalists I’ve heard in a long long time. Their single “Dead on the Dancefloor” has remained in my head since I heard it last night, perfect vocals, perfect melodies and perfect production. Don’t miss out on this band.

dj BC - Play That Funky Wii

In the uber-chic, super-cool mashup scene there are many many players, but few have achieved the success of Boston’s dj BC, his work has been heard from the radio stations in Boston and New York City to stations in Paris and Athens. His discography is massive and I recommend you check it out when you get a chance. This is one of my favorite tracks of his, “Play That Funky Wii”, mashing Vanilla Ice (Play That Funky Music, Whiteboy) with our beloved The Wii Sports Theme, if that’s not creative.. well I don’t know what is. A good song to start off the Wii-k with.

Dane Cook - 15 Cents

Man there have been some awful movies out lately and this man right here is to blame for a couple of them. And as much as you want to hate the man, no matter how many times your idiot friends overquote him and overhype him every time you listen to a new stand-up set of his you can’t help but laugh, a lot. Dane has a new DVD out called ‘Rough Around the Edges’ and it had me in stitches, picking one track was hard but I went with this one. For the love of all that is holy Dane, please.. stop doing movies, you’re bad at them.
