Girl Talk - Play Your Part (Pt. 1)

After teasing us all by saying that his new album would be out “sometime in the next few weeks,” Girl Talk officially released his fourth record, “Feed The Animals.” Check out the first single “Play Your Part (Pt 1)” which starts off strongly with “Gimme Some Lovin’” in the background, after a short introduction of the Unicorns’ drum beat from “I Was Born (A Unicorn).” Some other samples that also made me laugh out loud: Queen, Radiohead, Heart’s “Magic Man,” the Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys, Nirvana, etc. The list goes on and on.

While it’s a fun listen, I do think Night Ripper is considerably better. There are several moments on Feed The Animals where things just don’t lock in completely, such as the Metallica sample and the Cardigans’ “Lovefool.” There are also the inevitable mash-up moments where the key signatures contrast harshly, but it’s minimal — and this won’t bother you unless you’re a musician. Still, it’s a spectacular album.

Feed The Animals is available for download from Illegal Art’s website. He’s taking the pay-what-you-want-via-the-internet route, including the $0 option. And if I do say, this is the first album I think that takes the route that is actually worth paying for.
